Cyprus looks to boost Russian tourism

THE Cypriot Minister of Tourism is hoping to push the tourism market in during talks in Moscow this week.
In statements to the press, George Lakkotrypis said he will mainly focus on commerce and tourism during his contacts in the Russian capital.

“Our intention is to meet with the biggest air carrier flying to Cyprus, as well as with the biggest tour operator, with a view to limiting any possible losses from this market,” he said.

Russian tourism to Cyprus is expected to drop dramatically this year for a multitude of reasons.

The weak Russian currency in addition to the ongoing situation in Ukraine was blamed for many Russians choosing to take vacations at home last year.

The EU has imposed several rounds of sanctions over Russia’s role in Ukraine’s crisis, including its annexation of the Crimea region in March and its support for pro-Russian separatist rebels fighting in eastern Ukraine.
