TRAVEL GAZETTE – Total foreign arrivals recorded in Laos are expected to reach 4.33 million for the year, compared to a total of 4.15 million the previous year, according to new statistics show.
Revenues are expected to jump from 400 million U.S. dollars in 2014 to 670 million U.S. dollars for this year, according to 2015 data from the country’s Ministry of Tourism, Information and Culture.
While 2015 data on visits by individual countries of origin are not available, figures for 2014 revealed that tourist arrivals to Laos from China jumped 72 percent from 245,033 the previous year to 422,440 in 2014.
Fellow ASEAN neighbors Thailand and Vietnam continued to contribute the greatest number of visitors with 2 and 1 million arrivals respectively in 2014.
Rich in cultural and natural attractions but long hampered by poor infrastructure, Laos has identified tourism as a key avenue to provide employment and socio-economic development to its rural-dwelling population.
