TRAVEL GAZETTE – Pakistan’s annual world famous Shandur Polo festival started at the world’s highest polo ground in Pakistan’s northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, officials said.

Managing Director of the Tourism Corporation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mushtaq Ahmad, said that the festival will last for from July 29 to July 31 at the Shandur Top, the world’s highest polo ground in Chitral district of the province.

Since the inception of the event in 1936, the polo tournament has been played among different local teams from areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan region and Chitral district in the month of July every year.

Though it is an annual event, it was cancelled last year due to torrential floods that damaged the basic infrastructure in the area.

The festival is not just about polo, but several other events, including a tug-of-war, paragliding, musical chairs, indigenous folk culture, arts, crafts, traditional cuisines and folk music.

The uniqueness of festival attracts thousands of tourists from across the world. A camp village has also been set up at the venue where locals, inland and foreign tourists will reside and take part in different activities.

Pakistani government has taken extraordinary measures to provide foolproof security for guests, visitors and players.
