1967: Call to clean canals in Wales to attract tourists

Aug 1st, 1967 – Emlyn Hooson Liberal M.P. for Montgomery, wants disused Welsh canals cleaned up and used for recreation to increase tourism in Wales.

He has been told by the Minister of Transport, Mrs. Barbara Castle, that she shortly intends to publish a White Paper dealing with the use of inland waterways.

The Secretary of State, she said, was already considering proposals to improve the section of the Monmouth and Brecon canal through the Beacons National Park.
