Looking for a truly fantastic festive shopping experience, topped off with delicious food and wine?
Look no further than Berlin, where over 80 markets are gearing up for another season of brisk business.
Berlin may be ever-changing, but when it comes to can’t-miss cultural experiences, the classic Christmas Markets are an absolute must – especially as so many artisans make an appearance selling unique arts and crafts.
Each year many parts of the German capital are transformed into a magical Christmas shopper’s paradise, as small wooden chalets packed full of gorgeous Christmas gifts line the streets from Alexanderplatz in the east, to Charlottenburg in the west.
Soak up the sights, smells and sounds as you wander around the market; with the aroma of warming mulled wine and delicious German bratwurst filling the air.
Our top tip at the Travel Gazette is the “Weihnachtsmarkt vor dem Schloss Charlottenburg” –that’s at the old palace / castle. (Best underground stop is Richard Wagner Platz).
This market usually has a musical concert, quality stalls – selling everything from honey, chocolates, handmade toys, clothes and novelties – to a wide selection of drinks vendors and food stalls.
There are around 250 vendors and even a small Luna park for the kids. As well as being popular with foreign tourists, the market is a huge attraction for German visitors, many come on coach trips from all parts of the country.
The Charlottenburg Palace is lit in beautiful festive light, and is a tourist attraction in its own right.
