Advert Travel Gazette

1957: Clammy, choking, chaos creating smog blanketed London last night.

In many places visibility was nil. And one of the many trapped in It was the Duke of Edinburgh. He was on a tour of four youth clubs when the thick smog descended.

At Hammersmith Broad- way and Hyde Park Corner traffic halted well before midnight.

The Automobile Association said that late last night visibility was nil at Kingsbury, Stoke Newington, Morden and Regent’s Park.
