Hotels in Malaysia encouraged to improve

Hotels must also capitalise on its surroundings and local attractions to attract higher numbers of visitors

Travel Gazette – Hotels in Malaysia are being encouraged to improve their services to bring in more tourists to the country.

The Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said regardless of a hotel’s ranking, bad service would lead to lower reviews by customers, which would result in fewer guests.

‘There are many three- and four-star hotels that receive better reviews than five-star hotels. Hotel staff need to be more friendly and helpful towards guests,’ Syeun said.

“For Visit Malaysia Year 2020, we are aiming to welcome at least 30 million tourists and RM100bil in tourist receipts,” he added.

Malaysia has seen some diversification in its tourist product recently. Last year, it began promoting itself as a wedding destination to boost tourist arrivals into the country.

India was one of the “target countries” considering the large number of tourists from the country.

“It is the tourists from India that we are targeting because we receive about 600,000 visitors from the country (yearly), and we are aiming that next year and in 2020, it can reach up to 700,000 tourists,” a senior official said at the time.
